The Surface Density of Extremely Red Objects
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present initial results from a field survey for extremely red objects (EROs, defined here as (R-K ) ≥ 6) covering 154 square arcminutes of sky, from the first of 7 deep, wide-field K ′ images obtained as part of the Calar Alto Deep Imaging Survey (CADIS). The 5σ point source detection limits are K ′ = 20. 5 and R = 25. 0, while extended-source limits are up to 0. 50–0. 75 brighter. We identify a total of 8 bright EROs with K ′ ≤ 19. 0. Six of these bright EROs are resolved and are likely to be galaxies, while the remaining 2 are unresolved, with colors consistent with their being low-mass galactic stars. We derive a surface density for the 6 bright, extragalactic EROs of 0.039±0.016 arcmin, higher by a factor of 4 than previous values. We estimate that the volume density of bright EROs to be as high as that of nearby Seyfert galaxies. The surface density of Extremely Red Objects in high-z quasar fields
We report on a study of the surface density of Extremely Red Objects (EROs) in the fields of 13 radio-loud quasars at 1.8 < z < 3.0 covering a total area of 61.7 arcmin. There is a large variation in the ERO surface density from field to field, and as many as 30–40 % of the fields have roughly 4–5 times more EROs than what is expected from a random distribution. The average surface density exce...
متن کاملA Deep Multicolor Survey VII. Extremely Red Objects and Galaxy Formation
Extremely Red Objects (EROs) offer a window to the universe at z ∼ 1 analogous to that provided by the Lyman Break galaxies at z = 3. Passive evolution and hierarchical galaxy formation models make very distinct predictions for the K (2.2μm) surface density of galaxies at z ∼ 1 and EROs are a powerful constraint on these theories. I present a study of nine resolved EROs with R − K ≥ 5.3 and K ≤...

متن کاملEMISSION-LINE OBJECTS FROM A PRELIMINARY UKST OBJECTIVE PRISM SURVEY
A visual search has been made of four fields using United Kingdom 1.2m Schmidt Objective Prism plates with a reciprocal dispersion of 1 180 A/mm at HP. Such plate material is ideally suited to searches for emission-line galaxies. We present a catalogue of 53 emission-line objects, which comprises 45 galaxies, where individual HI1 regions are resolved in 16 bright galaxies; 8 are emission li...
متن کاملOVERDENSITIES OF EXTREMELY RED OBJECTS IN THE FIELDS OF HIGH-REDSHIFT RADIO-LOUD QUASARS M.Wold and L. Armus
We have examined the occurrence of extremely red objects (EROs) in the fields of 13 luminous quasars (11 radio-loud and two radio-quiet) at 1.8 < z < 3.0. The average surface density of Ks 19 mag EROs is 2–3 times higher than in large, random-field surveys, and the excess is significant at the 3 level even after taking into account that the ERO distribution is highly inhomogeneous. This is the ...
